Functional Nutrition Certification for Nurses: New Cohort Opens September 26

Ask any nurse how often a patient brings up food — what to eat before a procedure, what to avoid on a new medication, whether a supplement is safe — and you'll hear the same thing: constantly. Ask that same nurse how much formal nutrition training they received in school, and the answer is usually "almost none." That gap between how often nutrition comes up at the bedside and how little of it we're actually taught is exactly what our Functional Nutrition Certification was built to close.

What Is the Functional Nutrition Certification for Nurses?

The Functional Nutrition Certification for Nurses is a 35-AHNA-approved-CE-hour, rolling-cohort program teaching nurses to use nutrition as a clinical tool. Rather than a general wellness course repackaged for healthcare, it's built around the questions nurses actually field — from patients managing chronic conditions to those simply trying to eat better while they heal.

Our newest cohort opens enrollment this week, with a live session beginning Saturday, September 26. It runs on the same 4-week rolling structure as our earlier cohorts this year: four live sessions spaced two weeks apart (September 26, October 10, October 24, and November 7), so nurses joining this cohort learn alongside others at a similar stage even as new cohorts continue to open. Enrollment is $1,297 for the live cohort or $997 for the self-paced, on-demand option — both include the full 35 AHNA-Approved CE Hours, and recordings are provided for any live session you have to miss. For nurses who prefer an evening schedule, a separate evening cohort begins October 19.

Whether you're newly interested in nutrition or you've been fielding these questions for years without a framework to organize them, this certification gives you something concrete to bring back to your unit on Monday morning.

Five Herbs, One Saturday Morning: From Plant to Patient

Also landing this Saturday, September 26, is a shorter, lower-commitment way to start building your holistic toolkit: From Plant to Patient: Five Common Herbs in Herbal Medicine, Aromatherapy, and Homeopathy. This single 60-minute session (9:30–10:30 AM ET, $25) walks through five herbs nurses encounter often — in patient conversations, in the wellness aisle, and sometimes in their own medicine cabinets — and how each shows up across three different traditions of use.

Every registrant receives a free Five-Herb Field-to-Patient Clinical Guide, a printable reference you can keep at your station long after the workshop ends. It's a natural pairing with the Functional Nutrition Certification for anyone who wants to round out a nutrition-first foundation with a broader view of plant-based approaches — but it also stands entirely on its own for nurses who are simply curious and have an hour to spare this weekend.

Looking Further Ahead: The Integrative Nursing Certificate

Both of this week's offerings are part of a larger pattern at NFNH: helping nurses go deep on one modality at a time. Looking further ahead, we're preparing to launch something different — our first-ever Integrative Nursing Certificate, opening January 5, 2027. Where our workshops and single-topic certifications let you specialize, this new 60-contact-hour program (Pending AHNA Approval) is designed to bring four pillars together into one coherent foundation: Nutrition, Movement, Lifestyle Medicine, and Mindfulness & Breathwork. It's self-paced and on-demand, with an optional live cohort for nurses who want the added structure.

Our Founding Cohort will be limited to the first 25 enrollees at $997, before pricing rises to $1,997 on December 1, with payment plans available. If you'd rather start with one comprehensive credential than piece workshops together yourself, this is the program we built with you in mind — and joining the waitlist now means you'll be the first to know the moment enrollment opens.

Wherever You Start, Start Somewhere

You don't have to enroll in a 35-hour certification to begin integrating nutrition and holistic care into your practice — a single Saturday workshop counts too. What matters more than the size of the commitment is that you're building a toolkit you can actually use at the bedside, one credential or one workshop at a time. Explore all our holistic nursing programs here.
